Lone Cone Toffee Squirrel

The Squirrels' Tale

Once upon a time, (my granddaughters insist I begin all of my stories this way) it was a beautiful late autumn day in Charlotte, NC where I live and make Lone Cone Toffee.  Because the day was so unseasonably warm and lovely, I decided to take my wrapped toffee out onto the back deck to prepare it for shipping.  I had worked for several hours and took a break to have lunch.  I left a case of toffee sitting on the table on the deck where I had no reason to suspect that it was less than safe.

I came back about a half an hour later and what to my wondering eyes should appear but, oops, wrong story.
There on top of the case of toffee was a fat furry squirrel.  He had torn open the top of one of the boxes of toffee and was standing atop it pulling out pieces of toffee for his three cohorts.  They all had chocolate on their mouths and happy little smiles.  When they heard me, they turned, looked and then bolted away.  But not without leaving payment for the toffee.  There on the table beside the torn open boxes of toffee was a little pile of acorns.  Lone Cone Toffee; so delicious, even the wildlife love it!
